Have you ever dreamed of shopping for free? Not just for fun – but because you really needed stuff but couldn’t afford it? Well I have. I used to struggle – ALOT – like for basic things. Things that are taken for granted. Every decision was an anxiety riddled event…will I have enough food to last until the next time I can work? Do I have enough for toilet paper and the milk?

I used to walk down the street and fantasize about finding a place that had tables of free stuff – stuff that I needed, jackets, hats, food….a place that I wouldn’t have to trade my dignity for some help. Where there were no strings attached or questionnaires to fill out.

So I did what I knew best to do – I prayed. And prayed some more. And God blessed me. Not only did he bless me by giving me “stuff” (which he did) or by providing for my every need (which he has), God poured out his blessing on me so much, and has surrounded me with such generosity that my cup has “runneth” over into a torrential downpour of blessing.

You see – that fantasy of all those tables and all that free help was not just a “fantasy” of mine. It was a vision that God gave me. To do it for others. And we do! This will be our 9th year putting on our outreach events!! And who are we reaching out to? Simple. Everybody!

We rent a space and we come together and we give things out. You don’t have to believe in Jesus to get this free stuff. But I can tell you that many can’t deny His presence at these gatherings.

So come – and if you are blessed enough to not need anything, then let those who do, know about it. There will be hot food to eat, canned food to take home, warm clothes, coats, boots, brand new socks, hats, toiletries, toys and lots more – all FREE. God Bless you – each and every one of you!

HINTS ABOUT THE MIND – by Jessie Penn-Lewis

The strategic value of the ‘mind’, both to God and to Satan, is very great, for the following, among many other, reasons:

The mind, or understanding, is the vehicle through which the Holy Spirit, residing in the regenerate human spirit, reveals the knowledge of God to the redeemed man.

If the mind is clogged, passive, ‘blank’, uncontrollable, driven, fevered, irritated, or in any other abnormal condition, how can the ‘eye of the understanding’ be ‘filled with light’ and receive wisdom and insight in the full knowledge of God given by the Holy Spirit?

If the mind is filled with mental conceptions of truth, or with theories, prejudices, thoughts which have found lodgment apart from volition, reason, or examination, how can the Spirit of Truth reveal the things of God, and the truth of God as set forth in the written Word of God, to the understanding?

The mind, or understanding, stands between the spirit and the body as a transmitter of what comes from either. This is shown clearly in Romans 8v5-6, where the mind is described as being dominated by the ‘flesh’ or by the ‘spirit’.

The Spirit of God may dwell in the spirit, and not find outlet and expression if the mind is blocked or clogged in any way, for the spirit needs the mind for the transmission of light, as well as for the reception of spiritual knowledge of God.

The mind, or understanding, is the detective, so to speak, of the whole man. The ‘spirit of man is the candle of the Lord’, and the spirit needs the ‘understanding’ for expression, or perception, of what is revealed to it. The mind, enlightened by the Spirit of God and the Word of God, should be able to examine everything that is presented to it, and know whether it is truth or error (1 Corinthians 2v15). The renewed mind is therefore the perceptive faculty for discerning between good and evil (Hebrews 5v14). A ‘blank’ mind, whether induced or not, makes the man mindless a non-intelligent and irresponsible being, just as a darkened mind makes the man deceived, and unable to see clearly what he is doing, or where he is going.

The Holy Spirit needs the ‘understanding’ to fill it with the light of the knowledge of God; but the spirits of evil desire to displace the mind, or reason, from its place or else so inflame or exalt the ‘imagination’ until it overpowers the ‘understanding’. When the latter occurs, the believer is kept in a realm of phantasy over earthly, or even spiritual, things, and he lives in an unreal world, in which he is blinded to the true facts of life.

A large majority of Christians have never discovered their need of a renewed mind, and never asked themselves why their minds are subject to uncontrollable thoughts, imaginations, objectionable pictures, lapses of memory, unaccountable prejudices, intermittent concentration, heaviness, sluggishness, heat, or fever. They are in normal health, and would not dream of going to a doctor about these things, for it only means that they have no control of their minds, even in the small things of life. But let them ask themselves the question, ‘Who controls my mind? Is it in my own control? Is it in God’s control? If neither, then who controls in?’

When the truth dawns upon the child of God that his mind has never been fully set free from the power of the god of this world, he finds that the weapons he must wield for ‘casting down’ the exalted imaginations and bringing the thoughts into captivity, must be divine and not carnal. He discovers that no process of ‘resolution’ or ‘memory’, or mind training, will set him free, and that the mind and imagination are held by supernatural power beyond the reach of carnal weapons to destroy.

The central helm of the ship of man is the will. It is the seat of government through which God governs His redeemed subject. It must control the mind and choose what shall enter it or go out.

The renewal of the mind can alone come about through the entry of Truth. Each wrong thought placed in the mind by the enemy, and by which he holds the mind as his fortress, must be cast down as it is unveiled, and displaced by truth, until the entire spirit of the mind is renewed. (Ephesians 4v23).

The casting down of the exalted imaginations, and the removal of countless reasonings, not reason, may be done very quickly, or the battle may rage for a prolonged period. In some souls not one sentence of Divine Truth can penetrate without a battle, such as confusion in the mind, prejudiced thoughts, rebellious thoughts, and an unreasoned and unreasonable disturbance over what should, and would be, easily and calmly considered, if the mind was free to act without the interference of the enemy.

Let believers test themselves here. Why do they have unreasoning ‘opposition’ to what they have not carefully and prayerfully set themselves to understand? Does not the renewed mind ‘examine all things’? (2 Corinthains 2v15-16, 1 Corinthians 14v20).

Taking the mind out of the control of the god of this world, does not merely mean having all that is in the mind brought under the volition of the believer, as a tumultuous rabble of contrary elements compelled to obey a central authority. It means a renewal of the mind, whereby it is brought into such harmony with the Holy Spirit that it is filled with light instead of darkness, clearness of understanding instead of confusion, the ‘imagination’ purified and controlled, the reason liberated to work in normal ease, all in subjection to the Word of God, and the obedience of Christ (Colossians 1v9).

It is such a mind that is guarded by the peace of God, through an unceasing spirit of prayer, such a mind that is quickly obedient to God, as the believer deliberately turns away from all that would hinder its being filled with light, and chooses that it shall be occupied with things that are true, honourable, just, pure and lovely, and of good report (Philippians 4v6-8).

I Dare You!

Friday, July 18th, 2014

Dare to believe that whatever takes from your vision of the love of God is not of Him. Dare to believe that whatever minimises His grace is not of Him. Dare to believe that the love of God is for you. Dare to believe that the grace of God is for you. Just now, in the thick darkness, trust that love, that grace. Let go these distorted ideas of Him that have been inwrought by Satan’s malice. Upraise the shield of faith once more, and say as Job did, “Though He slay me, yet will I trust in Him”, and praise God. Yes, praise Him now. Do not wait till the darkness is past to praise Him. The way out of it, and the way into the walls of Salvation, is by the gates of PRAISE. “Whoso offereth the sacrifice of thanksgiving glorifieth Me, and prepareth a way that I may show him the salvation of God”. (Psalm 50 v23)

By John Piper

My aim in this message is to clarify from God’s word the ultimate meaning of true womanhood, and to motivate you, by God’s grace, to embrace it as your highest calling. What I will say is foundational to the “True Woman Manifesto” which I regard as a faithful, clear, true, and wise document.

The Opposite of a Wimpy Woman

I would like to begin by stating one huge assumption that I bring to this task tonight. I mention it partly because it may give you an emotional sense of what I hope you become because of this conference. And I mention it partly because it explains why I minister the way I do and why this message sounds the way it does.

My assumption is that wimpy theology makes wimpy women. And I don’t like wimpy women. I didn’t marry a wimpy woman. And with Noël, I am trying to raise my daughter Talitha, who turns 13 on Saturday, not to be a wimpy woman.

Marie Durant

The opposite of a wimpy woman is not a brash, pushy, loud, controlling, sassy, uppity, arrogant Amazon. The opposite of a wimpy woman is 14-year-old Marie Durant, a French Christian in the 17th century who was arrested for being a Protestant and told she could be released if she said one phrase: “I abjure.” Instead, wrote on the wall of her cell, “Resist,” and stayed there 38 years until she died, doing just that (Karl Olsson, Passion,  [New York: Harper and Row Publishers, 1963], 116–117).

Gladys and Esther Staines

The opposite of a wimpy woman is Gladys Staines who in 1999, after serving with her husband Graham in India for three decades learned that he and their two sons, Phillip (10) and Timothy (6), had been set on fire and burned alive by the very people they had served for 34 years, said, “I have only one message for the people of India. I’m not bitter. Neither am I angry. Let us burn hatred and spread the flame of Christ’s love.”

The opposite of a wimpy woman is her 13-year-old daughter Esther (rightly named!) who said, when asked how she felt about her father’s murder, “I praise the Lord that He found my father worthy to die for Him.”

Krista and Vicki

The opposite of a wimpy woman is Krista and Vicki who between them have had over 65 surgeries because of so-called birth defects, Apert Syndrome and Hypertelorism, and who testify today through huge challenges, “I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well”; and this: “Even though my life has been difficult, I know that God loves me and created me just the way I am. He has taught me to persevere and to trust Him more than anything.”

Joni Eareckson Tada

The opposite of a wimpy woman is Joni Eareckson Tada who has spent the last 41 years in a wheel chair, and prays, “Oh, thank you, thank you for this wheel chair! By tasting hell in this life, I’ve been driven to think seriously about what faces me in the next. This paralysis is my greatest mercy” (Christianity Today, January, 2004, 50).

Suzie

The opposite of a wimpy woman is Suzie who lost her husband four years ago at age 59, found breast cancer three months later, then lost her mom and writes, “Now I see that I have been crying for the wrong kind of help. I now see, that my worst suffering is my sin—my sin of self-centeredness and self-pity. . . . I know that with His grace, his lovingkindess, and his merciful help, my thoughts can be reformed and my life conformed to be more like His Son.”

Wimpy Theology Makes Wimpy Women

Wimpy theology makes wimpy women. That’s my assumption that I bring to this evening. Wimpy theology simply does not give a woman a God that is big enough, strong enough, wise enough, and good enough to handle the realities of life in away that magnifies the infinite worth of Jesus Christ. Wimpy theology is plagued by woman-centeredness and man-centeredness. Wimpy theology doesn’t have the granite foundation of God’s sovereignty or the solid steel structure of a great God-centered purpose for all things.

The Ultimate Purpose for the Universe

So I turn to my to my main point, the ultimate meaning of true womanhood, and start by stating this great God-centered purpose of all things: God’s ultimate purpose for the universe and for all of history and for your life is to display the glory of Christ in its highest expression, namely, in his dying to make a rebellious people his everlasting and supremely happy bride. To say it another way, God’s ultimate purpose in creating the world and choosing to let it become the sin-wracked world that it is, is so that the greatness of the glory of Christ could be put on display at Calvary where he bought his rebellious bride at the cost of his life.

I base this statement of God’s ultimate purpose on several texts. For example, Revelation 13:8 where John refers to God’s writing names “before the foundation of the world in the book of life of the Lamb who was slain.” So in God’s mind Christ was already slain before the creation of the world. This was his plan from the beginning. Why?

Because in being slain “to make a wretch his treasure”—to make a rebel his bride—the glory of his grace would shine most brightly, and that was his ultimate purpose according to Ephesians 1:4–6, “In love he predestined us for adoption as sons through Jesus Christ . . . to the praise of the glory of his grace.

The Glory of Christ at the Cross

From the very beginning, God’s design in creating the universe and governing it the way he does has been to put the glory of his grace on display in the death of his Son for the sake of his bride. “Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, that he might sanctify her . . . . that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish” (Ephesians 5:25–27). The ultimate purpose of creation and redemption is to put the glory of Christ on display in purchasing and purifying his bride, the church.

True Womanhood: At the Center of God’s Purpose

Now where does this take us in regard to the ultimate meaning of true womanhood? It does not take us to wimpy theology or wimpy women. It is not wimpy to say that God created the universe and governs all things to magnify his own grace in the death of his Son for the salvation of his bride. That’s not wimpy. And it doesn’t lead to wimpy womanhood.

But it does lead to womanhood. True womanhood. In fact, it leads to the mind-boggling truth that womanhood and manhood—masculinity and femininity—belong at the center of God’s ultimate purpose. Womanhood and manhood were not an afterthought or a peripheral thought in God’s plan. God designed them precisely so that they would serve to display the glory of his Son dying to have his happy, admiring bride.

Created to Display Jesus’ Glory

Genesis 1:27 says, “God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.” Sometimes we make the mistake of thinking God created us this way, and then later when Christ came to do his saving work, God looked around and said, “Well, that’s a good analogy, man and woman. I’ll describe my Son’s salvation with that. I’ll say it’s like a husband dying to save his bride.”

It didn’t happen like that. God did not look around and find manhood and womanhood to be a helpful comparison to his Son’s relation to the church. He created us as male and female precisely so that we could display the glory of his Son. Our sexuality is designed for the glory of the Son of God—especially the glory of his dying to have his admiring bride.

In Ephesians 5:31, Paul quotes Genesis 2:24, “Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.” And then he adds this, “This mystery is profound, and I am saying that it refers to Christ and the church.” In other words, from the beginning, manhood and womanhood were designed to display the glory of Christ in his relationship to the church, his bride.

A Distinctive Calling to Display the Glory of Christ

In other words, the ultimate meaning of true womanhood is this: It is a distinctive calling of God to display the glory of his Son in ways that would not be displayed if there were no womanhood. If there were only generic persons and not male and female, the glory of Christ would be diminished in the world. When God described the glorious work of his Son as the sacrifice of a husband for his bride, he was telling us why he made us male and female. He made us this way so that our maleness and femaleness would display more fully the glory of his Son in relation to his blood-bought bride.

This means that if you try to reduce womanhood to physical features and biological functions, and then determine your role in the world merely on the basis of competencies, you don’t just miss the point of womanhood, you diminish the glory of Christ in your own life. True womanhood is indispensable in God’s purpose to display the fullness of the glory of his Son. Your distinctive female personhood is not incidental. It exists because of its God-designed relationship to the central event of history, the death of the Son of God.

So let me say a word about what that looks like if you are married and if you are single.

A Word to the Married

First, a word to the married. Paul says in Ephesians 5:22–24, “Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to their husbands.”

The point here is that marriage is meant to display the covenant-keeping love between Christ and his church. And the way it does this is by men being men and women being women in marriage. These are no more interchangeable than Christ is interchangeable with the church. Men take their cues from Christ as the head, and women take their cues from what the church is called to be in her allegiance to Christ. This is described by Paul in terms of headship and submission. Here are my definitions of headship and submission based on this text:

  • Headship is the divine calling of a husband to take primary responsibility for Christ-like, servant leadership, protection, and provision in the home.
  • Submission is the divine calling of a wife to honor and affirm her husband’s leadership and help carry it through according to her gifts.

The point here is not to go into detail about how this gets worked out from marriage to marriage. The point is that these two, headship and submission, are different. They correspond to true manhood and true womanhood, which are different. And these differences are absolutely essential by God’s design, so that marriage will display, as in a mirror dimly, something of the glory of the sacrificial love of Christ for his bride and the lavish reverence and admiration of the bride for her husband.

I know this leaves a hundred questions unanswered—about unbelieving husbands, and believing husbands who don’t take spiritual leadership, and wives who resist their husbands’ leadership, and those who receive it but don’t affirm it. But if you—you married women—embrace the truth that your womanhood, true womanhood, is uniquely and indispensably created by God to display the glory of his Son in the way you relate to your husband, you will have calling of infinite significance.

But what if you aren’t married?

A Word to Singles

The apostle Paul clearly loved his singleness because of the radical freedom for ministry that it gave him (1 Corinthians 7:32–38). One of the reasons he was free to celebrate his singleness and call others to join him in it, is that, even though marriage is meant to display the glory of Christ, there are truths about Christ and his kingdom that shine more clearly through singleness than through marriage. I’ll give you three examples:

1) A life of Christ-exalting singleness bears witness that the family of God grows not by propagation through sexual intercourse, but by regeneration through faith in Christ. If you never marry, and if you embrace a lifetime of chastity and biological childlessness, and if you receive this from the Lord’s hand as a gift with contentment, and if you gather to yourself the needy and the lonely, and spend yourself for the gospel without self-pity, because Christ has met your need, then he will be mightily glorified in your life, and particularly so because you are a woman.

2) A life of Christ-exalting singleness bears witness that relationships in Christ are more permanent, and more precious, than relationships in families. The single woman who turns away from regretting the absence of her own family, and gives herself to creating God’s family in the church, will find the flowering of her womanhood in ways she never dreamed, and Christ will be uniquely honored because of it.

3) A life of Christ-exalting singleness bears witness that marriage is temporary, and finally gives way to the relationship to which it was pointing all along: Christ and the church—the way a picture is no longer needed when you see face to face. Marriage is a beautiful thing. But it is not the main thing. If it were, Jesus would not have said, “In the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven” (Matthew 22:30). Single womanhood, content to walk with Christ, is a great witness that he is a better husband than any man, and in the end, will be the only husband in the universe.

In other words, true womanhood can flourish in marriage and singleness.

True Womanhood for the Glory of Christ

I commend to you this truth: The ultimate purpose of God in history is the display of the glory of his Son in dying for his bride. God has created man as male and female because there are aspects of Christ’s glory which would not be known if they were not reflected in the complementary differences of manhood and womanhood. Therefore, true womanhood is a distinctive calling of God to display the glory of his Son in ways that would not be displayed if there were no womanhood.

Married womanhood has its unique potential for magnifying Christ that single womanhood does not have. Single womanhood has its unique potential for magnifying Christ which married womanhood does not have.

So whether you marry or remain single, do not settle for a wimpy theology. It is beneath you. God is too great. Christ is too glorious. True womanhood is too strategic. Don’t waste it. Your womanhood—your true womanhood—was made for the glory of Jesus Christ.

War On The Saints Study:
“It is striking to find that the Lord did not attempt to convince the Pharisees of His claims as the Messiah, nor take the opportunity of winning the Jews, by yielding to their desires for an earthly king. His one work in this world was manifestly to conquer the Satanic prince of the world by the death of the Cross (Heb. 2: 14); to deliver his captives from his control, and to deal with the invisible hosts of the prince of darkness working at the back of mankind (See 1 John 3: 8).

The commission He gave to the twelve, and to the seventy, was exactly in line with His own. He sent them forth, and “gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to preach the gospel” (Matt. 10: 1); to “first bind the strong man” (Mark 3: 27), and then to take his goods; to deal with the invisible hosts of Satan first, and then “preach the gospel.”

From all this we learn that there is one Satan, one devil, one prince of the demons, directing all the opposition to Christ and His people; but myriads of wicked spirits called “demons,” lying spirits, deceiving spirits, foul spirits, unclean spirits, subjectively at work in men. Who they are, and whence their origin, none can positively say. That they are spirit beings who are evil is alone beyond all doubt; and all who are undeceived and dispossessed from Satanic deception, become witnesses, from their own experience, to their existence, and power. They know that things were done to them by spirit beings, and that those things were evil; therefore they recognize that there are spirit beings who do evil, and know that the symptoms, effects and manifestations of demoniacal possession have active, personal agencies behind them. From experience they know that they are hindered by spirit beings, and therefore know that these things are done by evil spirits who are hinderers. Therefore, reasoning from experimental facts, as well as the testimony of Scripture, they know that these evil spirits are murderers, tempters, liars, accusers, counterfeiters, enemies, haters, and wicked beyond all the power of man to know.

The names of these evil spirits describe their characters, for they are called “foul,” “lying,” “unclean,” “evil,” and “deceiving” spirits, as they are wholly given up to every manner of wickedness, and deception, and lying works. – Jessie Penn-Lewis; War On The Saints Chapter 2

Apples & Oranges

‘Conversion is supernatural and produces a change in us. Genuine conversion causes us to hate the sin we once loved. It means that you no longer live in wilful habitual sin.

“Do Christians struggle with sin? Yes. Can a Christian fall into sin? Absolutely. Can a Christian live in a continuous state of carnality all the days of his life not bearing fruit and truly be Christian? Absolutely not or every promise in the Old Testament regarding the New Testament covenant has failed and everything God said about discipline in Hebrews is a lie.” – P.W

A tree is known by its fruit.

Apples don’t make a tree an apple tree. The apples merely reveal the true nature of the tree. Repentance is a fruit of conversion and often reveals that it is genuine. It is not that you have to stop sinning. It is that when God saves you, you turn away from the sin you once loved.

Jesus’ death for sins was an act of salvation. To receive God’s gracious gift Scripture explicitly teaches that:

Truly, then, God overlooking the times of ignorance, now He strictly commands all men everywhere to repent, because He has appointed a day in which He is going to judge the world in righteousness by a Man whom He appointed, having given proof to all by raising Him from the dead (Acts 17:30-31).

Repentance is necessary in order to receive salvation – therefore it is a necessary component of the Gospel we proclaim. This repentance from sin and turning away from it is also a turning to Christ in saving faith in order to receive salvation:

For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast (Ephesians 2:8-9).

And that repentance and forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem (Luke 24:47).

And how I kept back nothing that was profitable, but have shown you and have taught you publicly, and from house to house, testifying both to the Jews, and also to the Greeks, repentance toward God and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ (Acts 20:20-21).

Some people claim that “faith alone” in Ephesians 2:8 negates the need to repent. But we must remember this hermeneutical rule: Scripture cannot contradict itself – therefore in understanding it rightly, it must harmonize with the rest of Scripture. As we harmonize all of Scripture we can clearly see that sometimes only faith or belief is mentioned, sometimes only repentance is mentioned, and sometimes both are mentioned.

By harmonizing all of these (rather than focussing on a single verse) we can see that the salvation call is a call to turn away from sin in repentance and a turning to Christ in faith – trusting Him alone to save us. The turning to Christ (faith) necessitates a turning away from our carnal affections (repentance). Man cannot serve two masters. As Todd Friel says; “Repentance and faith are two wings of the same bird that fly us to the Savior”.

This salvation is ultimately a work of God. Both repentance (Acts 11:18) and faith (Ephesians 2:8) are works of God. We cannot come to God unless the Spirit draws us (John 6:44). We are not saved by praying a prayer or walking down to the front of a church. It is God who saves. It is God who gives us a love for His law and a desire to live in holiness. It means we have a new relationship with sin manifest in a love for God’s law and a desire to obey it.’ – C. Buettel

I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you shall be clean from all your uncleannesses, and from all your idols I will cleanse you. And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes and be careful to obey my rules. (Ezekiel 36:25-27).

The Spirit Of Truth

THE SPIRIT OF TRUTH

By Jessie Penn-Lewis.

“When He, the Spirit of Truth, is come, He shall guide you into all the truth . . .” said the Lord to His disciples. The name of this ‘Other’ who would come to them the Lord gives first as “The Comforter” – a Person as truly as He Himself was. Another who would “fill His place”, a “Paraclete” – meaning, Dr. Elder Cumming says, much more than the word “Comforter” conveys – “One called in to defend, support, advise, help, and comfort”. All this we rejoice in, for do we not need a “Comforter” in this world of sorrow, and One able to “defend, support, advise”, and “help” us?

But we are apt to forget that with the name “Comforter” an addition to that name is given by the Lord Himself, which defines and limits its meaning. He said, “He shall give you another Comforter. . . even the Spirit of Truth . . .” (John 14:16&17); “When the Comforter is come . . . even the Spirit of Truth . . .” (John 15:26); “When He, the Spirit of Truth, is come” (John 16:13).

The name “Comforter” therefore depicts His work, but His name “Spirit of Truth” describes His essential character; therefore, all that He does in and for men as the “Comforter” He must do in accordance with His character as the Spirit of Truth. If He is ‘called in’ by any believer, to ‘defend, support, advise, help, and comfort’, He can only act in all these ways as the “Spirit of Truth”, defending, supporting, advising, helping, comforting, in accordance with truth, and truth alone.

The essential character of the Spirit of God, as the Spirit of Truth, needs emphasizing at the present time, when we are disposed to think only of Him as the Spirit of Power, or of Love, in His working in the life of the believer. What is the supreme evidence of a man being filled with the Spirit? Some say ‘Power’, while others say ‘Love’; but if we carefully consider the question in the light of the Word of God, we shall see that truth is before Power, or even Love, and that for Power and Love to be truly of God in the believer, it is necessary to have Truth as the groundwork, because Love and Power can both be simulated by the evil one as an angel of light. Jukes points out that the marks of the Divine nature which distinguish it from all counterfeits are first Truth, and then Love. This is surely true of the Spirit of God, for He is Power, and He is Love, but He is first of all the “Spirit of Truth” proceeding from the Father, through the Son, into the world of men.

In the Lord’s last words to His disciples before His Cross He very clearly defined the work of the Spirit of Truth, when He should come to dwell among men. This may be briefly summarised as follows:

1. As the Spirit of Truth He makes disciples know the truth of a) the union of Christ with the Father – “I am in My Father”: b) The union of the believer with Christ – “Ye in Me”; and c) The indwelling of Christ in the believer – “I in you” (John 14:20).

2. This being established by His indwelling, the Spirit of Truth then teaches believers the truth as embodied in the words of Christ (John 14:26);

3. Bears witness to Christ (John 15:26), and

4. Guides the believer into “all the truth” (John 16:13).

Not only truth about God, but truth concerning all things as they are seen from the viewpoint of God – the condition of man, the exceeding sinfulness of sin; the truth concerning the arch-foe of the Son of God – in short, the truth around us and in us as seen by the God of Truth. Man in his lost condition is permeated with the spirit of untruth – the spirit of Satan – who once knew the truth, but did not stand in it (John 8:44).

We generally think of a ‘lie’ as an act of speaking what is untrue, and have not fully understood that Satan’s nature is the embodiment of untruth as Christ Himself, not only in act and in word, but in nature, was, and is, TRUTH. The Lord made this clear in His words to the Pharisees when He said of Satan: “There is no truth in him” ; therefore, “when he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own – nature -, for he is a liar, and the father thereof”. If the whole world lieth in the evil one, then the world of men breathe in, so to speak, the very AIR OF UNTRUTH IN THOUGHT CONCERNING ALL THINGS AROUND THEM, and particularly concerning themselves. “What is truth?” said Pilate, and “What is truth?” men continue to cry, whilst they are still blinded by the fallen life of Adam, full of the poison of the enemy of God, as he blinds the minds of them that do not believe the truth of God. Hence the world is full of men believing untruths about God, themselves, and Satan – even believing untruth to be truth, by the subtle blinding of the foe.

The Spirit of God, therefore, comes into a world enveloped in a miasma of untruth, as the “Spirit of Truth” to reveal the truth and bear witness to the truth, which in its widest meaning we may describe as seeing things as God sees them – for this alone is truth.

“On November 26, 2008, a gang of terrorists stormed the Taj Mahal Palace in Mumbai, India. After the carnage had left 200 people dead, a reporter interviewed a guest who had been at the hotel for dinner that night. The guest described how he and his friends were eating dinner when they heard gunshots. Someone grabbed him and pulled him under the table. The assassins came striding through the restaurant, shooting at will, until everyone (or so they thought) had been killed. Miraculously, this man survived. When the interviewer asked the guest how he lived when everyone else at his table had been killed, he replied, “I suppose because I was covered in someone else’s blood, and they took me for dead.”
– Ravi Zacharias (From his book ‘Has Christianity failed you?’ p.42)

“There is no deliverance from ‘deception’ but by the acknowledgment and acceptance of truth. And this facing of truth in regard to certain spiritual and ‘supernatural’ experiences, means a keen edged knife to the man in his self-respect, and pride.” – Jessie Penn-Lewis

“It has been thought almost universally that the only way to deal with demon-possession is by the casting out of the evil spirit, by some Divinely equipped believer. But facts prove that this method is not always successful, for though the diagnosis of the intruder’s presence may be correct, yet the ground that gave it occupation cannot be cast out; and unless the ground is dealt with, no full relief can be obtained, or change seen, in the majority of cases. In others, when the evil spirit apparently departs, it must not be concluded that the person is entirely free, for it may be that what has occurred is only that a particular manifestation has ceased, and it is not unlikely that another manifestation may appear; possibly not a visible one, or one easily perceived or detected, but recognizable by any who have learned to discriminate between the workings of evil spirits, and those which are human or Divine.

It is possible also to suppress a certain manifestation for a time, and not entirely get rid of it; and the same manifestation may return again and again in different guise, unless the ground is dealt with. In some instances, where the possession is so manifest that the true inner personality of the victim is almost entirely lost sight of, the relief may be immediate: but where the intruder hides himself so subtly in the mind, or body, as to be indistinguishable from the operations, or actions of the person – hidden in some state, or form, apparently natural or physical – the deliverance will not be obtained by “casting out” only, but by the truth being given to the mind, and the volition of the person actively refusing and disowning the ground.

The very first step to freedom is the knowledge of the truth as to the source and nature of experiences the believer may have had since his entrance into the spiritual life, which possibly may have been perplexing, or else thought with deepest assurance to be of God. There is NO DELIVERANCE FROM “DECEPTION” BUT BY THE ACKNOWLEDGMENT AND ACCEPTANCE OF TRUTH. And this facing of truth in regard to certain spiritual and “supernatural” experiences, means a keen edged knife to the man in his self-respect, and pride.” – An excerpt from Chapter 8: The Path To Freedom, from the book War On The Saints.
